**Course Requirements**: Doctoral students obtaining a Ph.D. in another discipline are welcome to choose Statistics as an outside minor. Five graduate courses in statistics are
required, at least three of which must be at the 600-level or above taken from the Department of Statistics. The specific minor courses must be
approved by the Director of Graduate Studies of the Department of Statistics.

## Master of Science in Applied Statistics

Course Requirements:

A total of 31 credit hours, including the following 4 courses:

STAT S520: Introduction to Statistics

STAT S631: Applied Linear Models I

STAT S632: Applied Linear Models II

STAT S690: Statistical Consulting

Two courses should be chosen from the following:

MATH M463: Introduction to Probability Theory I

STAT S620: Introduction to Statistical Theory

STAT S625: Nonparametric Statistics

STAT S626: Bayesian Theory and Data Analysis

STAT S637: Categorical Data Analysis

STAT S640: Multivariate Data Analysis

STAT S670: Exploratory Data Analysis

The remaining 12 credit hours should be taken in an area relevant to the field of Statistics and must be approved by the Director of Graduate Studies.

## Master of Science in Statistical Science

Course Requirements:A total of 31 credit hours, including the following 6 courses:

The remaining 6 credit hours must be from any statistics course at the 500-level or above and must be approved by the Director of Graduate Studies.

**To receive the degree of MSSS, the student must fulfill one of the following options:**

**A. Consulting Internship.**

The student who elects this option will follow STAT-S 690 with a 1-semester internship at the Indiana Statistical Consulting Center (ISCC). The internship will count for 3 credit hours, which may be applied toward the required total of 31 credit hours. The student will work under the direct supervision of a professional consultant and will produce progress reports that (1) can be shared with clients, and (2) will be assembled into a portfolio that can be shared with prospective employers. This option is recommended for students who intend to seek employment after receiving the MSSS degree.

**B. Research Paper.**

The student who elects this option will work under the supervision of a faculty advisor. Any IU faculty member with a full, part-time, or adjunct appointment in the Department of Statistics is eligible to supervise an MSSS research paper. In addition to the written paper, the student should also report his/her work in an oral presentation to the department. A student who pursues this option will register for 3 credit hours, which may be applied toward the required total of 31 credit hours. This option is recommended for students who intend to pursue doctoral studies after receiving the MSSS degree.

**Course Requirements:** A total of 90 credit hours, including at least 60 credit hours of coursework.
